What is Speedman? — Platypus World

Speedman is a 3D Animated short film being created by these Two Guys.

Based on characters we invented when we were 10, and iterated upon over the years as a series of inside jokes that only made sense to us. Speedman is an attempt to adapt all our crazy ideas and characters into a coherent, understandable world that could possibly be entertaining to other people.

Heavily inspired by Ninja Turtles, Street Sharks, Garbage Pale Kids, and a poor attempt to draw a duck from Duck Tales. The Platypus World is a silly world, where a ridiculous race of “Platypi” wage war with their neighboring planet, The Octo. In an attempt to gain an advantage in this conflict, the smartest of the Platypus race, Doctor Rubella, engineers a super soldier who becomes celebrated by the Platypus people and given the name “Speedman”.

Like all things sloppy in this world, very little thought was put into who has just been given unbelievable power. Hilarious consequences will follow!

Speedman is the first part of what could be a multi episode story that would take us the rest of our lives to finish, and have a maximum play time of 25 minutes. This isn’t the first time we’ve attempted to tell this story. One of my first 3d short films (which helped me learn 3ds Max) was about these characters.

All previous attempts were terrible, but now that we are older, more experienced, and properly embarrassed, we can move forward and make a professional looking animated story that a handful of people will probably enjoy.

Now what?

This Blog will serve as a production diary for the Speedman short. We’ve been working on this thing for a few years now, so there may be some retroactive posts; storyboards, concepts, layout, animation break downs etc. Future updates will also give a little more detail on the characters and the world they inhabit.
